Student Entrepreneurs Shine at Side Hustle Expo 5.0

By Center for Entrepreneurship and Community Development on Tue, 11/04/2025 - 08:38

Loyola’s entrepreneurial energy was on full display at Side Hustle Expo 5.0, where students from across disciplines showcased their creativity, ambition, and hustle.

The annual event, hosted by the Center for Entrepreneurship and Community Development (CECD), transforms the Danna Student Center into a pop-up marketplace and celebration of innovation — featuring ventures that range from handmade products and baked goods to tech startups and creative services.

This year’s event drew dozens of participants and hundreds of community members, who shopped, connected, and voted for their favorite ventures in the People’s Choice Award, while a panel of alumni and community judges selected the scholarship winners. In total, $2,500 in prizes were awarded.

A special thank-you goes out to our judges — Amy Sins, Erich Mattei, Allan Perales, and Jill Farrell — for lending their expertise, time, and insight to help guide and encourage Loyola’s student entrepreneurs. Their thoughtful feedback helped make this year’s Expo an unforgettable learning experience for all.

Justus Rippert’s startup, Streamline, is an intuitive app designed to optimize processes for small and medium-sized businesses. What began as a way to help fund his MBA studies quickly turned into a scalable idea with real potential.

“I was really impressed by how many people participated and how interested everyone was,” Justus shared. “The judges gave great, valuable feedback — they pointed out how much potential my idea has. Originally, it was just meant to be a side hustle, but now I’m thinking bigger.”

He plans to reinvest his winnings directly into Streamline’s development.

“The more time and money I spend in this early phase, the better the outcome will be.”

His advice to future participants?

“Don’t be afraid to show what you’ve got. My idea isn’t ‘sexy’ or easy to understand, but I still won first prize. The feedback is worth it — even with a niche idea, you can win.”

🥈 Runner-Up: Kat Lee ’27, Katamaran Reptile Ranch

A returning Side Hustle veteran and the 2025 Wolf Pack LaunchU winner, Kat Lee has turned her passion for crested geckos into a thriving and ethically run business.

“I participated the last three years and really enjoyed the experience,” Kat said. “This year, I really stepped up my display skills.”

Kat plans to combine her winnings with her LaunchU prize to expand her operations.

“I’ve already begun the process of expanding for future production, securing buyers overseas in South Korea, and ramping up advertising for 2026.”

She also took to heart one judge’s advice about sustainable growth.

“A judge told me that expanding too quickly can cause businesses to collapse. I’m taking steps to ensure slow, stable growth — which fits my model, since geckos take time to mature.”

And her top tip for future hustlers?

“Bring as much product as you can! Samples, merchandise, customer reviews — people want to see proof of function. And make your booth memorable!”

🥈 Runner-Up: Zyrea King ’25, Zee’s Sweets

From a dorm-room bakery to a fully branded venture, Zee’s Sweets has grown right alongside its founder, Zyrea King.

“My first time at the Expo was two years ago, when I was a freshman,” she reflected. “Back then, I had just started Zee’s Sweets. Two years later, it’s a full brand with staple cookies, branding, and partnerships. Seeing how far I’ve come made me feel confident.”

Winning this year reaffirmed her journey.

“It’s a tangible recognition of my growth and hard work,” she said. “The prize money will go toward baking supplies so I can increase production.”

She also took the judges’ business advice to heart.

“One suggested finding a location near places like Apple or Walmart. When I start looking for a storefront, I’ll definitely consider that.”

Zyrea’s message for future participants:

“Absolutely do it. You’ll learn from others, get advice from real entrepreneurs, and gain confidence presenting your brand.”

💫 People’s Choice Award: Karyse Gocoul ’27 (MBA) , Yes, It’s My Real Hair

Voted by the Loyola community, Karyse Gocoul’s vegan, holistic beauty brand Yes, It’s My Real Hair captured hearts — and the People’s Choice Award.

“My Side Hustle experience went really well!” Karyse said. “The competition was great, and I got to practice introducing my brand, connecting with customers, and sharing its value.”

For Karyse, the award was deeply meaningful.

“Winning the People’s Choice Award shows that people and the community see the value of my product.”

She also appreciated the judges’ thought-provoking feedback.

“A judge asked if there was a point in my business that had been hard to get over. It made me reflect on what’s helped me reach a steady place — and what’s next for growth.”

Her advice to future participants?

“Use your time wisely when creating your board and table experience. And to anyone interested in entrepreneurship: starting is the hardest part. Don’t wait for the ‘right time’— just start. People will come.”

The Side Hustle Expo continues to grow as one of the most anticipated events on Loyola’s campus — blending creativity, commerce, and community spirit. It’s a space where students test their ideas, learn from feedback, and see firsthand what it means to turn a passion into a business.
